Tips for Shooting Your First Wedding
A great thing about shooting portraits is that you get to work with and capture genuine human emotion. When people hire you to shoot their wedding, they are trusting you to capture the emotion and magic of the day. Even if this is your first time shooting a wedding, you can still deliver beautiful photos by focusing on the right things.
Use the Right Lenses
Different lenses allow you to have different ranges of focus and a variety of effects. Depending on if the wedding is indoors or outdoors, different lenses may give a clearer or more beautiful shot. In general, a great lens to have on hand is a 50mm lens because of how versatile it is. Once you have done some research on the venue and what affects the couple might like, you can pack a few additional lenses for a variety of shots.
Get Good Lighting
You can make your subjects look good by using proper lighting. Even if you are a great photographer, it can be difficult to get beautiful photos without good lighting. To ensure that you have good lighting at the wedding, stop by the venue beforehand if possible. Check out the natural lighting, angles, and how the light shifts throughout the day. If there isn’t adequate natural lighting or if the wedding will be at night, make sure there is adequate artificial lighting. It may also be good to have something to reflect light off of for close-up or individual shots.
Know What the Couple Wants
When shooting a wedding, you should always strive to get exactly what the couple wants and will appreciate. They are trusting you with a very special day, so it is important that you deliver what they are expecting and what they will love. What may seem important to you may not be that important to the couple. To avoid this miscommunication, suggest that the couple come up with a shot list detailing all of the shots they must have. Having a shot list can help keep you and the couple on the same page and help you not to forget anything important.
Shooting a wedding can be incredibly rewarding because couples will cherish the photos for many years after. Preparing adequately for their big day will translate directly into the photos you can deliver. Get to know the couple well and combine that knowledge with your artistry to create an album that you and they will love.
